You’ve booked your maternity photoshoot (yay!), and now you’re staring at your wardrobe thinking… “What on earth do I wear?”
Let me take the pressure off - this is less about fashion rules and more about feeling like yourself.
Because when you feel comfortable and confident, it shows in every photo.
Start With This: What Do You Feel Good In?
Are you a flowy dress kind of person? Or do you live in jeans and oversized tees? Think about the pieces that make you feel beautiful, relaxed and you. That’s your starting point.
This shoot is about telling your story, not fitting into someone else’s idea of what maternity should look like.
My Go-To Tips for Outfits That Photograph Beautifully
1. Flowy Dresses Work Magic
Soft, breathable fabrics with movement look stunning - especially outdoors in that golden Kalgoorlie light. They add shape, elegance and a sense of calm. Plus, they highlight your bump in such a soft, gentle way.
2. Solid Colours Over Busy Prints
Neutrals, earthy tones and soft pastels are timeless and help keep the focus on you - your expressions, your story, your glow. Think warm whites, rust, blush, sage or dusty blue. Avoid big logos or patterns that distract.
3. Think Texture, Not Just Colour
Chunky knits, linen, lace and cotton all add visual interest without overpowering. Texture adds depth, especially in close-up belly shots and detail moments.
4. Bare Bump or Covered? Your Call.
Some mamas want those intimate, skin-on-skin moments. Others prefer a more covered and cozy feel. We’ll create space for both if you’re open to it, but the key is doing what feels right for you.
5. Compliment, Don’t Match (For Partner or Kids)
If your partner or little ones are joining, aim to coordinate colours rather than match. Keep the tones soft and within the same palette for a cohesive look.
Bonus: Bring Options
I always suggest bringing a couple of outfit choices to your maternity session - maybe one dressier option and one casual. That way, we can create a mix of looks that reflect all sides of you - the radiant, the real, the in-between.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
I offer styling guidance for all my sessions, so you’re never left guessing. You can even borrow from my client wardrobe if something catches your eye. Together, we’ll make sure your outfit feels like a natural extension of your personality - not a costume you’re wearing for the camera.
So let’s dress in something that feels good on your body, honours this season of your life and helps tell your story exactly as it is - beautifully, unapologetically, you.
